Headed west in search of a new beginning in the mid-1950s, black Southern Baptist itinerant worker Homer Smith encounters a group of Catholic nuns scratching out an existence in the remote Southwest. Mother Maria Marthe, convinced that Homer was sent to them by God to build them a chapel, persuades him to stay (without pay) and take on this seemingly impossible task.
