The traditional Somapa Thai Dance Company performs the drama Pralor, based on an ancient, well-known Thai poem. It tells the romantic and tragic story of a love that blooms between a handsome king and not one, but two beautiful princesses. And though they face parental and political pressure, the three will not be denied. They plot to meet, even with their states at war, and ultimately have a brief reunion before meeting their tragic end. The Somapa Thai Dance Company has been performing in the D.C. area since 1999, and have a wide repertoire ranging from classical and historic to folk works.

Description

The centuries-old romantic and tragic tale of Lilit Pralor is a dance drama based on what is considered among the most sensual pieces of Thai poetry. An ill-fated love springs and blossoms between a handsome king and two beautiful princesses of neighboring warring states. They throw caution to the wind and plot impatiently to meet and consummate their passion despite the dangers of travel and parental and political opposition. The union of the three is short-lived once they are discovered and ends sadly with the lovers perishing alongside their loyal servants in battle.
