Inspired by the amazing and amusing true story of local legend Vigo Jansen, a D.C. grave robber who gained infamy in the press for providing cadavers to scientists, this backstage comedy-drama takes place in 1884, and finds Jansen digging a hole for himself as he attempts to stage a one-man show based on his exploits.

We had a great time. The story was very well written. The actors did a great job. The director of the venue greeted us and explained things afterward. It was a great time, and there is parking onsite.

A very tiny theatre but plenty of free parking! I was hoping to learn more of the historical ties to Washington, DC and more of Vigo Jansen's story (as he prepares the play of the story of his life). There is a seating adjustment for Act II though that I found fascinating! For what it cost to see live theatre, I'm not sorry we went.

The first half is the comedy and second half is the drama. It was fun for a night out.

Description

The Resurrectionist King
by Stephen Spotswood
Directed by Tom Prewitt

The Resurrectionist King explores the life of a man unlike any other in D.C.’s past: the true story of Vigo Jansen, a grave robber who became a local legend. Jansen robbed local cemeteries to get cadavers for D.C.’s medical schools and scientists. Hounded by the police, but loved by the press, he became a folk hero to D.C. residents. Set during a 24-hour period in 1884, the play follows Jansen’s disastrous attempt to create a stage play about his grave-robbing career.

Starring: Evan Crump, Dexter Hamlett, Jeremy Lister, Rachel Manteuffel, Megan Reichelt, and Brandon White
