Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 is the most popular of all the Russian composer's work, and one of the 20th century's most powerful symphonies. The public reaction to Symphony No. 5 was astounding -- upon its premier performance in 1937, it garnered an ovation lasting over half an hour. Influenced by Gustav Mahler, it was written both to placate the Soviet regime, who had loudly voiced their disapproval of Shostakovich's previous work, and for the Russian public as a moving reflection on their suffering under Stalin. Gerard Schwarz conducts the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in this monumental piece, along with Strauss' Violin Concerto led by Concertmaster/violinist Eric Wyrick and Romantic-era composer Goldmark's In Springtime. Loved the show, but the seats were all the way in the back on the orchestra level when we were supposed to be in the "Mid" section. Slightly disappointed with the "velvet" experience and supposedly being placed at top priority, but a great show nonetheless.

I actually left about 45 minutes in to the show. The seats were really small and the theater was hot, old and out dated. The balcony seats were too far away also. I will not purchase seats anymore not knowing where they are located.
This show is recommended for ages 13 and up.
