Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 is the most popular of all the Russian composer's work, and one of the 20th century's most powerful symphonies. The public reaction to Symphony No. 5 was astounding -- upon its premier performance in 1937, it garnered an ovation lasting over half an hour. Influenced by Gustav Mahler, it was written both to placate the Soviet regime, who had loudly voiced their disapproval of Shostakovich's previous work, and for the Russian public as a moving reflection on their suffering under Stalin. Gerard Schwarz conducts the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in this monumental piece, along with Strauss' Violin Concerto led by Concertmaster/violinist Eric Wyrick and Romantic-era composer Goldmark's In Springtime. My kids (four kids ranging in age from 10 to 17) and I attended the 2pm Sunday performance at the State Theatre in New Brunswick. The music was great and there was even some audience participation. The seating in the theatre was tight and it was difficult to see the performance behind the heads of so many... sounds funny, but the kids had to reposition themselves to see several times throughout the performance, as did I. So, I enjoyed the performance, but did not care for the theatre in which it took place.
