HEY GOLDSTAR! WHY WON'T YOUR REVIEW PAGE LET ME RATE THIS EVENT THE 5 STARS IT DESERVES?

I saw Amanda McBroom on Valentine's Day, and a more perfect evening is hard to imagine. One of cabaret's most gifted singing actresses and one of musicc's most powerful songwriters, Amanda gave as intimate, heartfelt, moving, and often terrifically funny performances I've seen in a very long time. And a definite added bonus was having Mchelle Browerman- herself one of the great cabaret songwriters- as her accompanist. The way these two exceptional women worked as one to create an evening of romance and feeling told through song stands as one of the great musical partnerships.

Now, a little bit about the Metropoltan Room. I've attended countless cabaret performances in a wide variety of venues, and while the staff at the Metropolitan Room was to a person charming, gracious, and accommodating, the room itself is one of the most uncomfortable ever! While the traditon (and economic necessity) of seating patrons at very small table spaced very close together is to be expected, the chairs in this club are certainly the worst that could be found, as uncomfortable as anything I've ever had the misfortune to be stuck in for over an hour.

My date and I were further crammed in at the very front edge of the stage and off to the side, so that one of us (I) had to contort my self around in a very awkward manner in order to see the performance, with no room to put my feet unless it was to have them share the stage with Ms. McBroom. Being a designer, it was immediately obvious to me that there were a number of solutions to seating in what is an admittedly awkward space, and if the Metropolitan Room is interested I would gladly donate my services!

Additionally, I would have to agree with another reviewer here who mentions the marketing for this show- or lack thereof- done by the Metropolitan Room. I would never have known that Ms. McBroom was appearing had it not been for the Goldstar emails, and I read all 3 New York daily papers every day, not to mention the city's weekly entertainment magazines. I understand that the economics of cabaret preclude expensive advertising in the media, but surely a competent publicist could have secured decent coverage for artists of the stature and standing as Amanda McBroom and Michelle Browerman.

So to sum up: Amanda McBroom- 5 stars plus; the Metropolitan Room- 5 stars for the staff, 1 star (barely) for the venue.

Terrific, as always. Have been following Amanda ever since we recorded an album together at Rainbow And Stars (she sang, I applauded). I've since seen her in venues all over the place, and while she's a fine vocalist (and songwriter) it's as an actor that I admire her most. She inhabits each song as if it's a one act play. I once told her after a show, "I come to see you act; the fact that you can do it on pitch is just a bonus."

Metropolitan room could use a good/better marketing department. I saw Amanda's first night, so there may have subsequently been reviews published, but unless I walk past their window display or stumble upon a listing at Goldstar (as I did this time) I'd have no idea what's happening there.

Aamanda McBroom is a consumate performer for over 20 years. She did not fail last night. In fact, she was truly the star! Her performance ranging from Cole Porter to Jacques Brel was so moving and personal. She speaks and sings to her audience with sublety and sophistication. She is a wonderful song writer who had a "miracle" writing the "Rose" which Bette Midler put on the map. If Cabaret is your style, run to the Metropolian Room.
