This cruise would have been more enjoyable if it wasn't sold to the brink of the boat's capacity. The seating arrangement of the ship is such that you are right next to other people, there's no individual seats, just rows where everyone sits right next to one another. If the boat were not crowded this wouldn't be an issue, but clearly they sold tickets for this event with the thought of filling every nook and cranny of the boat. The seating was awkward and not enjoyable at all. If you had the bad luck to be stuck next to chatty people, or were seated right next to the buffet, there was no escape. It did not make for quite the relaxing cruise experience we were going for.

The food was decent, the table which it was set up on was tiny, so for the first hour of the cruise there was always a line to get to it, especially because they only provided one waffle maker. I'm not one to nitpick, but it was maddening to know nearly every issue with this cruise could have been solved with just selling about 10 less tickets. Clearly however making money was more important then patron's comfort.

While we're on the subject of money, a tip jar was on the bar for the duration of the cruise. I had no issue with this and was happy to tip because the bar tenders were pleasant. At the end of the cruise however an announcement was made about "showing your appreciation" to the ship's crew, and the same tip jar was put out as we disembarked, which I found rather tacky. These tickets were not at all cheap, and I found tip grubbing to be in bad taste, especially when the tip jar was already quite full to begin with!

The boat is very nice - and bigger on the inside than it appears - and the food was first rate.

Because of a bridge problem, we could not circumference Manhattan, but we had a good sail nevertheless.

Only downside - they were delayed in letting everyone on the boat and we had to wait in very cold temperatures.

The cruise was beautiful. The food was pretty good. Overall, we really enjoyed the day... so relaxing. A truly beautiful way to see the city. However, I do believe it was a little overpriced. We paid about $85 (and that was the discounted Goldstar rate). I would say that the whole thing would have been a great deal for about $60, and reasonably priced at $70. But, for more than that, the food should have been a little better, I think. I certainly couldn't have imagined paying $130 or whatever the full price was. But, since it was New Years Day and it was our last day visiting the city, I was fine with what we paid. Just be advised that while the food is good, it's certainly not $130 good. But like I said, overall... a memorable time.

About the Ticket Supplier: Classic Harbor Line LLC

Built in 1994 in the Scarano Boat Building of Albany, New York, the Schooner Adirondack is an 80-foot wooden replica of a classic turn-of-the-century pilot schooner.

Heading south from Chelsea Piers and down the Hudson River to Battery Park, the Schooner Adirondack passes by Ellis Island and sails out to the Statue of Liberty. Wind and time permitting, she will head toward Governor's Island, breeze by the Financial District and the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River.

The 1920s-style motor yacht "Manhattan," also built by Scarano Boat Building, is brand new to the New York City harbor as of spring 2006. This 80-foot, wood-trimmed, Gilded Era commuter yacht runs full circumnavigations of Manhattan, dinner cruises and sunset cruises, and is available for private charter.
