Description
A staple of the screen and the stage, actress and singer Betty Buckley established her reputation with her haunting rendition of "Memory" as Grizabella, the Glamour Cat, in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats. The role won Buckley a Tony Award in 1983 and inaugurated what has become one of history's most iconic theater careers. She received her second Tony Award nomination in 1997 for her performance as Hesione in Triumph of Love and an Olivier Award nomination for her interpretation of Norma Desmond in the London production of Sunset Boulevard, which she repeated to more rave reviews on Broadway. Her other Broadway credits include 1776, Pippin, Song and Dance, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Carrie.
In the realm of film, she made her debut in Brian de Palma's 1976 screen version of Stephen King's Carrie. She also appeared in Tender Mercies (1983), Frantic (1988), Another Woman (1988), and Wyatt Earp (1994). More recently, she co-starred in M. Night Shyamalan's 2008 film The Happening. On the television screen, she starred for three seasons in the HBO series Oz and as Abby Bradford in the hit series Eight is Enough. She also appeared in The Pacific for HBO and has enjoyed guest spots on numerous other programs, including Evergreen, Without a Trace, Pretty Little Liars, and Law & Order: SVU.
Buckley has recorded 12 albums, among them Bootleg: Boardmixes from the Road (2010), Quintessence (2008), 1967 (2007), and the Grammy-nominated Stars and the Moon: Betty Buckley Live at the Donmar (2001). Her next album Ghostlight will be released in 2012. In addition to her efforts as a performer, Buckley is active as a teacher of scene study and song interpretation, having been a faculty member at the University of Texas at Arlington and the Terry Schreiber Acting School in New York City. In April of 2009, she received the Texas Medal of Arts Award for Theater, and she was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame in 2007.
