The Harlem Gospel Choir, the most famous gospel choir in America and one of the preeminent gospel choirs worldwide, brings the music of Harlem and the black church to Times Square in a joyous celebration of high-energy, hand-clapping singing and dancing. Made up of the finest singers and musicians from Harlem's black churches and the New York/Tri-State area, the choir strives to create a better understanding of African-American culture and make the world a more loving and peaceful place. Allen Bailey was inspired to create the choir in 1986 after attending a celebration at Harlem's Cotton Club in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That inspiration can be felt in the music today, as the choir's uplifting songs of hope touch the soul and raise the spirit. Cherry Poppin' Daddies were a nice surprise -- different rhythms, good music. I expected them to start at 8, but they had another band open for them and they didn't come on until after 9. Having to leave after 10 to catch a bus, I didn't get as much of them as I would have liked, expecting two hours. B B King's guy at admission was very helpful - crossed my name off the Goldstar list and that part was all straightforward!

More Information About Cherry Poppin' Daddies

Description

Integrating ska, swing, punk, jazz, funk, hardcore, country and the kitchen sink since 1989, the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies came together as a group of misfit dropouts from the University of Oregon. They burst onto the Great Northwest's thriving music scene with a four-song tape and a name no one would take seriously, including themselves.

Putting many a show and broken heart under their belts (often performing under bastardized versions of their name), they independently produced three full-length albums: Ferociously Stoned (1990), Rapid City Muscle Car (1994), and Kids on the Street (1996). These included such road-trip mix-tape topping songs as "Drunk Daddy," "Ding Dong Daddy of the D-Car Line," and "Shake Your Lovemaker." Dedication and many hours of blood, sweat, and drinking led to their widely known multi-platinum recording, Zoot Suit Riot: The Swingin' Hits of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies (1997). After a whirlwind tour and a bout with fame, they emerged intact with no lack of passion for creating their own unique brand of music and shtick entertainment. The band released Soul Caddy in 2000, but the world was not quite ready for the Daddies’ eclectic mix.
