Totally missed the food (although I heard there were empanadas!) but drank well...

Went with 12 friends and it was 3 hours of fun! The boat is very spacious and has a place for everyone I would say accommodates 100 people or so. Upstairs is the dance floor and the band, outside on the top deck you can get some fresh air feel the breeze and gaze at the city views. Downstairs is a cash bar with $2.00 sodas, $6.00 beers and $8.00 rum and coke style drinks in small plastic cups though! Also they were serving food on board grilling hot dogs and had small other snacks for purchase. The downstairs area was very big and had two nice bathrooms and about 20 tables with plenty of seating for sitting with your friends and hanging out next to the windows downstairs. The staff was very cool and the views of the statue of liberty, Manhattan and new jersey night skyline, governors island, the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges at night were all excellent. Fun times and great price I will definitely being going again!Written on May 19 2009

I went with two friends from college and we had a lot of fun. My only complaint was that the band played in a small space on the inside and we all wanted to be outside to enjoy the nice weather and the views that evening. Other than that, it was a great time for a mere $13.50.Written on Jun 01 2009

Fantastic way to spend a Friday evening. We watch Chicha Libre perform at Barbes. The boat was so much roomier--plus the Manhattan views can't be beat. I hope they do it again on the Half-Moon. We had such a great time.Written on May 18 2009

Description

Chicha Libre plays a mixture of latin rhythms, surf music and psychedelic pop inspired by Peruvian music from the Amazon. The Brooklyn-based band mixes up covers of forgotten Chicha classics with French-tinged originals, re-interpretation of 70’s pop classics as well as cumbia versions of pieces by Satie and Ravel.

The Half Moon is a 200-capacity boat docked at Skyport Marina, at 23rd Street & the East River. The Half Moon is a 2-level boat, with a full bar and bathrooms on the lower level. The band plays on the upper level, which has a roof, but is open on the sides. There is also a large open deck on the upper level, where smoking is permitted as you enjoy panoramic views of the city and beyond. Departing from 23rd Street and FDR Drive, the Half Moon heads south along the East River and passes underneath the 3 major bridges (Williamsburg, Manhattan and Brooklyn), then cruises through New York harbor to the Statue of Liberty, which it circles for approximately 30 minutes. It then turns around and makes the same trip again in reverse. The experience of watching the bridges pass overhead while a great band is rocking 20 feet away is not to be missed!
