This new exhibition brings you face-to-face with New York City's landmarks -- in complete darkness. Imagine riding a rumbling subway or maneuvering the crossroads of the world in Times Square without being able to rely on your sense of sight. Dialog in the Dark is a unique and interactive exhibit in which visitors are led through a pathway by blind or visually-impaired guides. Within that pathway is a series of New York City environments, highlighted by city-centric scents, sounds, temperatures, and textures. Because it's totally dark, the only way to experience the simulated everyday environments is through senses other than sight. Totally dependent on their guides, visitors get to experience firsthand the lack of sight in an urban setting and the barriers and challenges it can create.

It was a good experience. I was able to experience some of NYC the way a blind person does and it was an eye-opener.

Overall good experience. The guide was wonderful. Not for people who are claustrophobic and not for kids under 12 because it is scary at times.

For 1hour A guide takes up to 8 people in complete darkness thru the streets on new York. At first it can be somewhat scary but after awhile you get to navigate around as a sightless person. After the hour is over you gain an appreciation of what is like to be a sightless person.

Besides the amazingly cranky usher who led us into the start of the tour (not one of the actual guides) at 2:40 p.m. on Nov. 13, 2011, who freaked out merely because someone tried to exchange a too-tall walking stick for a shorter one (and refused to apologize for the outburst), our actual guide for the experience -- who was herself sight-impaired -- gave a very interesting, helpful and educational tour that ended with a meaningful discussion about her daily experience in darkness. I do think that the design of this "attraction" would become dramatically more meaningful, and satisfying, to its customers if there were a simple, unattended "recon" briefing at the end at which the whole journey were shown on video replay, using the already-installed infrared cameras. We could see ourselves fumbling around, not only for comic relief but also to get a vivid impression of the challenge to be blind. Otherwise, highly recommended.

Description

Visitors are led by blind or visually impaired guides through a specially constructed and totally darkened exhibition, in which sounds, wind, temperatures, and textures of New York City convey the characteristics of common daily environments.

In the dark, these environments take on a whole new dimension. Visitors must rely on the guides for security and orientation in this world without pictures. Relying also on their other senses, visitors learn to “see” in an entirely new way. Their experience leads to reflection: social borders are reduced and ignorance gets changed into openness and respect.
