This was one of the most exciting and memorable opera performances I have seen in years. The direction was fascinating, detailed and original. The conducting was top level and fully satisfying and all the roles were sung and acted with conviction, talent and skill. The opera, although hundreds of years old, was shown to be an entirely relevant masterpiece.
It would take too long to mention all the felicitous details. The leading role of Don Giovanni was played by Peter Mattei. He was perfect; 6"3, boyishly handsome, charismatic, believable, acting to the hilt and singing with a gorgeous, beautiful, pliable voice.
The rest of the cast was up to this extremely high standard - which is very rare. The surprise was how sexy and gorgeous Barbara Frittoli was. One expects this from Ana Netrebko but not so much from La Frittoli who is often quite matronly. Not here!
All in all - TERRIFIC!!! Memorable! Bravissimi all around!!
