The play was fun to watch for me and my young granddaughter, but did require some idea of the political enviornment of that period of time.

Description

The Harlem Repertory Theatre, the Yip Harburg Foundation and the City College of New York (CCNY) Department of Theatre and Speech present a world premiere of a new adaptation of the 1951 musical, Flahooley. The delightful albeit insightful musical features colorful puppets, charming animation and a brilliant score and libretto.

Yip Harburg who also wrote the lyrics and was a driving creative force behind the landmark Broadway musical, Finian's Rainbow, and the popular and beloved musical film, The Wizard of Oz, conceived this musical theatre gem. Flahooley, infused with Yip’s trademark humor, wit and social satire, tells the tale of daydreamer Sylvester, a brilliant toy maker trapped in a corporate factory, his more practical girlfriend Sandy, B.G. Bigelow, the toy maker CEO forced to use big oil to keep his company alive only to be overpowered by an Arabian geniein- a-lamp, Abou, who overproduces Bigelow’s coveted Flahooley doll. As the dolls flood the market, all children get free dolls, the company goes bust, live puppets get into the act, making for an all-too-timely American musical fable about repression, capitalism and intolerance. Flahooley was written and developed by Yip Harburg as a reaction to Joe McCarthy’s reign in the 1950s when the shameful “blacklisting” of Americans citizens occurred.
