London's National Theatre is broadcasting its original stage production of King Lear, and you can catch a live screening of the show at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Symphony Space. Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) returns to the National Theatre to direct Simon Russell Beale (Timon of Athens) in the title role of Shakespeare's epic tragedy. Regarded as among Shakespeare's greatest plays, King Lear depicts an aging monarch's descent into madness as his family and country are torn apart by the ambition and jealousy of his children. This sweeping legend depicts the devastating consequences of pride, as King Lear's hubris and his daughters' ambitions destroy not just their own family, but an entire nation as well. Learn More
Quotes & Highlights
- "Mr. Garbo and Ms. Santos transmit a steady stream of fun. For the audience, the experience is -- what's the word? -- buoyant." --The New York Times
Costumes, props and set pieces expand, deflate and roll, in this funny, mesmerizing and colorful theatrical event.
The excitement begins when a ten-foot cylinder slithers onto the stage and implodes, and before long the entire audience is playing catch with gigantic inflatable props!
Suddenly, a globulating red cube takes on a life of its own, rolling, gliding, tumbling in synch to the music, right up to the edge of the stage. The audience gasps, and the big block teeters dramatically on the brink, quaking and bulging and changing shape.
Now, a lovely ballerina dances a can-can, but her skirt starts to grow longer and longer, becomming a ball gown, then a balloon engulfing her, finally spiriting her away.
Fast-paced, energetic, universally engaging and theatrically clever, Garbo and company mesmerize with imaginative imagery and artistic foolishness.
