Early in his life, A.J. Croce lost his vision as the result of a brain tumor, but between the ages of four and ten partial sight gradually returned to his left eye. During this time period he began to play piano, inspired by the music of blind artists Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. He started playing professionally at the age of 12 and by age 16 he was a regular at several San Diego nightclubs. He toured with B.B. King at age 18 and released his first solo album the following year. A.J. now has seven albums to his name and has toured with artists as legendary as his father including Carlos Santana, Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, James Brown and Ray Charles. A great talent in his own right, the younger Croce carries on his father's legacy while paving new musical roads of his own. Learn More

The line to get into the venue was almost to Broadway as it took so long to get in. The sound was distorted as the DJ sound was awful and many microphones sounded terrible. I grew up on these hip hop legends and I knew most of their music. The venue was packed. I lefft after Kurtis Blow and that was at 2:30am

Description

Renowned hip-hop DJ, rapper, musician, and producer Funkmaster Flex hosts a night of legendary hip-hop artists, with music by the legendary DJ Hollywood.

A timeless artist and hip-hop legend, Kurtis Blow is one of the founders and creators of recorded rap. In 1979, at the age of 20, he became the first rapper to be signed by a major label, and his single "The Breaks" from his 1980 eponymous debut was the first rap single to be certified gold.

The Cold Crush Brothers are a legendary hip-hop group that formed at the dawn of hip-hop in 1978 in the Bronx. The group set the standard for emceeing and was especially known for its memorable onstage routines. Although the outfit never released a full-length album, it gained notoriety with singles like "Fresh, Wild, Fly and Bold."

The Crash Crew was one of first rap groups to record for the legendary Sugar Hill Records label, cutting famous singles like "We Want to Rock," "Breaking Bells," and "On the Radio." Based in NYC, the group consisted of DJ Daryll C., G. Man, La Shubee, Barry Bistro, EK Mike C., and Reggie Reg.

Hailing from Harlem, rapper Rob Base is perhaps best known for his duo with DJ E-Z Rock. The pair's hit single "It Takes Two" (1988) topped the Billboard charts and was certified multi-platinum. As a solo artist, Base also released the album The Incredible Base (1989), which included his take on Edwin Starr's Motown classic "War."

Rapper JoeSki Love is best known for his platinum-selling 1986 single "Pee Wee's Dance," whose catchy hook has become a veritable hip-hop staple. Getting his start with a rap group signed to Vince Davis's Vintertainment label, Love eventually teamed up with producer Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor to produce his 1991 Columbia Records debut, Joe Cool.

Emcee, DJ, and record producer Lovebug Starski is best known for his single "Amityville (The House on the Hill)," which broke into the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1986. The track appeared on Starski's album House Rocker, also released in 1986. The '90s also saw Starski working with his friend DJ Hollywood, who will provide the music for tonight's show.
