Jazz innovator Charlie "Bird" Parker's 1950 release Bird with Strings was an influential and hugely popular marriage between bebop rhythms and classical string orchestra, featuring such standards as Gershwin's "Summertime" and the Lorenz and Hart classic "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," along with "Just Friends," "April in Paris," and more. These Grammy Hall of Fame recordings, originally on Mercury, are performed in concert by Wess "Warmdaddy" Anderson and Charles McPherson, along with trombonist and music director Vincent Gardner.

One of the best jazz performances I've seen. Of course, the Time Warner venue for Jazz at Lincoln Center is outstanding. Tickets were available at box office as stated by Gold Star.

Description

In 1950, Bird with Strings was the recording that transformed Charlie Parker from a bebop innovator into a pop superstar. The idea of having a major soloist playing classic standards with a lush, romantic string section and singers immediately became a staple of the 1950s, thanks to Bird.

Sixty years later those orchestrations (by such greats as Gerry Mulligan and Neil Hefti), like the hit singles "Just Friends" and "April in Paris," still sound brilliant, as leading saxophone ornithologists Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson and Charles McPherson will demonstrate. They are joined by trombonist and music director Vincent Gardner.

Featuring members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas

  • Ryan Kisor, trumpet
  • Ehud Asherie, piano
  • Ben Wolfe, bass
  • Victor Lewis, piano
