Part of Jazz at Lincoln Center's Jazz for Young People series, What Is Improvisation? finds drummer Matt Wilson and his Arts and Crafts ensemble, including JLCO saxophonist Ted Nash, leading an interactive, hour-long exploration of improvisation. The most fundamental and revolutionary aspect of the genre, improvisation gives jazz its unique balance of self-expression and collaboration, practiced execution and wild experimentation. It should be an ear-opening experience for adults and kids alike. Just prior to each performance of this family-friendly event, there will be a music workshop for kids, who are invited to bring instruments.

This event was great for kids. There were pre-concert activities which they enjoyed. The plot-to improvise as if you were in a cooking competition- was funny and imaginative. The theater is beautiful, and you can see well from every seat. It's worth the price, which was very cheap through Goldstar, anyway.
