Performance was unusual, some parts excellent, some parts strange. Big mixup with seats, as we were not on Goldstar list and had to spend time with manager (after 10 minute wait) and show receipt to get seats. Seats initially assigned were row R (21st row) near the back and were occupied. Usher had us wait while he contacted manager and we ggot seats in row J. Not a pleasant experience.Written on Mar 19 2011

This was the second performance of this company I saw this week, the first being Tuesday ("Snows on the Mesa" and "Maple Leaf Rag").Written on Mar 18 2011
The first piece was "Embattled Garden." It was dramatic but harsh and I wondered if some of the choreography is dated. Regardless, there was a raw intensity that became very emotional, but not necessarily appealing.
The second piece was "Cave of the Heart" based on the Greek mythological character, Medea. The conflict was beautifully portrayed but it was the Sorceress (Miki Orihara) who stole the show. That is not to say, however, that the other roles were neglected. It was indeed a stellar and moving performance by all dancers.
Following an intermission came "Appalachian Spring." A strong musical piece on its own, I found it breathtaking with its precision, crispness of style, costume, stage setting, and lighting. I would run back to see it again and again if it were possible. Both this and "Cave of the Heart" should be made available on DVD.
Disappointing was the sound. Perhaps it was the recordings, but it is my sense that the sound equipment is not up to par which I find surprising for this venue which generally promoted jazz music. The sound was tinny and just not up to par with the staging.
Briefing of all three pieces took place beforehand by Jan Eilber, Artistic Director. I found this unnecessary as the descriptions were almost word for word in the program notes. Had there been a more formal discussion or shared insights, it might have been better appreciated.
