During the 1940s and '50s -- a time when jazz oscillated between cool, hot, and hard bop -- bandleader Stan Kenton's sound was considered "progressive." While other big bands were starting to break up, Kenton introduced the world to his radical and hugely successful new 40-piece orchestra, which featured such jazz stars as Lee Konitz. To celebrate Kenton's centennial, Konitz joins the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis as they revisit the time when one jazz musician knew exactly where he was going: strictly forward. Great musical experience! It was hosted by Billie Jean King who shared a great deal of information about Mary Lou Williams, a great jazz pioneer. The knowledge was punctuated with the multitalented Wynton Marsalis Jazz Orchestra, two guest pianist and even a good vocal solo by one of the bandmembers. Overall a musical feast in a beautiful, comfortable auditorium!Written on Nov 16 2009

Description
Come celebrate the centennial of the First Lady of Jazz: pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams. From her early works as an arranger of the swing era with Andy Kirk, to her ambitious extended works like the classic Zodiac Suite, Mary Lou's music was profound and beautiful.
It takes more than one piano player to honor this great artist's legacy, and at least two modern interpreters: Geri Allen and Geoffrey Keezer will be joining the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis for the celebration.
Free pre-concert discussion at 7pm, hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Ken Druker with special guest Father Peter O’Brien, executive director of the Mary Lou Williams Foundation.
