Micaela Leon presents her new cabaret show, Tigers, Muses & Jasmine - The Wild Heroines of Weimar Berlin. The show intersperses songs by Friedrich Hollaender, Mischa Spoliansky, Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill with the words, ideas and signature gestures of a remarkable rogues gallery of eight female icons of the legendary cabaret scene that thrived in Germany between the two World Wars -- including Marlene Dietrich, Anita Berber and Valeska Gert.

Micaela Leon provided a captivating evening as a dynamic, charming, beautiful German singer with an excellent voice. She so inhabits the 1920s Weimar Republic characters that she is imitating that you're not exactly sure who she really is until the end of the performance when she becomes herself. Her accompanist seemed to be completely in sync with her which made the performance very smooth. (The only small item that detracted from the total charm and illusion of being transported back in time was the wireless mike that she was wearing which was out of place with her sophisticated 1920s outfit. I think she would be better off with hand-held and floor mikes. Using such mikes as props would also smooth out some of her arm movements.) The Metropolitan Room provides good service in an appropriate environment for this type of cabaret performance. I intend to see her next show.
Written and performed by Micaela Leon, "Tigers, Muses & Jasmine" intersperses songs by Friedrich Hollaender, Mischa Spoliansky, Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill with the words, ideas and signature gestures of a remarkable rogues gallery of eight female icons. The show not only celebrates the avant-garde derring-do of these free spirits, it dramatizes the brewing Nazi storm on the horizon as it grows increasingly menacing. Among the eight women portrayed, who traded in the scandal, rebellion and sense of experimentation that swelled in Berlin between the two world wars -- are Marlene Dietrich, Anita Berber and Valeska Gert.
