Mostly Mozart's Bach and Polyphonies series concludes with a Rose Theatre concert featuring the International Contemporary Ensemble and conductor Ludovic Morlot. Transcriptions of counterpoint from The Art of Fugue serve as a base for explorations into the brightly colored Antara of George Benjamin, Harrison Birtwistle's theatrical Slow Frieze, Helmut Lachenmann's fascinating musique concrète and more. Description

Using transcriptions of counterpoint from Bach’s The Art of Fugue as a jumping-off point, the International Contemporary Ensemble explores the transparent and colorful polyphony of George Benjamin (who uses the hiccup-like medieval hochetus technique), the theatrical polyphony of Harrison Birtwistle, and Helmut Lachenmann’s Mouvement, “a whirring, rasping, ricocheting maze of new, beautifully fashioned sounds” (The New York Times).
