Early in his life, A.J. Croce lost his vision as the result of a brain tumor, but between the ages of four and ten partial sight gradually returned to his left eye. During this time period he began to play piano, inspired by the music of blind artists Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. He started playing professionally at the age of 12 and by age 16 he was a regular at several San Diego nightclubs. He toured with B.B. King at age 18 and released his first solo album the following year. A.J. now has seven albums to his name and has toured with artists as legendary as his father including Carlos Santana, Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, James Brown and Ray Charles. Quiet Riot is not the same as they were in their '80s heyday, but they tried hard and put on a good show. It was like watching a fairly convincing Quiet Riot cover band. The opening bands at that particular performance were dreadful and ruined the mood of the night. Maybe their other shows will have different opening acts. Quiet Riot is a rock 'n' roll phenomenon. Famously described as the first heavy metal band to top the pop charts, the Los Angeles quartet became an overnight sensation thanks to its monster 1983 smash album Metal Health. The band's follow-up album Condition Critical (1984) went double platinum, and the band has continued to record and tour throughout its almost 30-year history. Today, the band features founding member Frankie Banali, veteran bassist Chuck Wright, and guitarist Alex Grossi from the band's last and most stable lineup, together with new vocalist Mark Huff.
The story of Quiet Riot began in 1980 when Kevin DuBrow formed a new band under his own name, working with Frankie Banali and a variety of musicians over the next few years before signing with Pasha/CBS Records and soon producing Metal Health (1983). Driven by the irresistible double whammy of the title track's muscular bass line and a raucous rendition of the old chestnut "Cum on Feel the Noize," the album stormed up the U.S. charts, duly reaching the number one spot and going platinum five times over in the process. The sales of Metal Health have now exceeded 10 million worldwide. Condition Critical (1984), which went on to sell over two million copies in the U.S., included another chart-ready cover in "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" and the self-penned "Party All Night."
Despite numerous lineup changes over the coming years, the band continued to release successful albums, including QR III (1986), QR (1988), Terrified (1993), Down to the Bone (1995), Alive and Well (1999), Guilty Pleasures (2001), and Rehab (2006), the group's latest release and 11th studio album. Frankie Banali, who will appear with the band tonight, boasts an almost 30-year history with the band and has the distinction of being the only member to have recorded on every single Quiet Riot release. After over four years since the loss of his friend and founding band member Kevin DuBrow, and with careful consideration, soul searching, and the blessings and support of DuBrow's family, Banali has decided to continue his journey and the musical legacy of Quiet Riot with the band performing tonight.
