The Harlem Gospel Choir, the most famous gospel choir in America and one of the preeminent gospel choirs worldwide, brings the music of Harlem and the black church to Times Square in a joyous celebration of high-energy, hand-clapping singing and dancing. Made up of the finest singers and musicians from Harlem's black churches and the New York/Tri-State area, the choir strives to create a better understanding of African-American culture and make the world a more loving and peaceful place. Allen Bailey was inspired to create the choir in 1986 after attending a celebration at Harlem's Cotton Club in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That inspiration can be felt in the music today, as the choir's uplifting songs of hope touch the soul and raise the spirit. I am familiar with Lyfe Jennings through his heartfelt live Apollo performance of "Cry" and a few live songs I downloaded from his AOL Sessions on iTunes: "Must Be Nice" & "Let's Stay Together." He had a few other songs that had radio play of which I could take or leave. His voice is so powerful and soulful automatically, without much effort. That being said, I expected his performance to be a much better experience than it was.Written on Nov 09 2009
Lyfe's performance was not cohesive... the set was disjointed and didn't really have a flow. He sang with his back to the right side of the audience and interacted with his band most of the time... and maybe he thought this was amusing... but before beginning every song... he'd ask his band: "where we at? I don't even know..." before going to the next song. Very unprofessional... and annoying. I want an artist who is on top of his game and giving us his best. He should know his set and let it flow. It would also have been nice if he ironed the jeans that he wore hanging off his butt. He only sang PARTS of his best songs... eg, "Cry" and I have heard rappers use the "N" word less times than him... WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT?!
I was greatly disappointed in his performance and would not go see him again unless he made the effort to study the legends before him and learned how to deliver his music effectively. I will say that his voice... was amazing. Some "yelling" at some points... but if you don't mind yelling (in key), then cool. He is so gifted with his voice that he doesn't even appear to be trying.
