The Harlem Gospel Choir, the most famous gospel choir in America and one of the preeminent gospel choirs worldwide, brings the music of Harlem and the black church to Times Square in a joyous celebration of high-energy, hand-clapping singing and dancing. Made up of the finest singers and musicians from Harlem's black churches and the New York/Tri-State area, the choir strives to create a better understanding of African-American culture and make the world a more loving and peaceful place. Allen Bailey was inspired to create the choir in 1986 after attending a celebration at Harlem's Cotton Club in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That inspiration can be felt in the music today, as the choir's uplifting songs of hope touch the soul and raise the spirit. I've been seeing the Jukes since the early days at the Stone Pony. And this was one of the most enjoyable shows of all.
There isn't anything I can point to. I can't articulate a reason why... except to say it all just felt right.
Johnny opened with Warren Zevon's "Keep Me in Your Heart for a While" in commemoration of the date.
Then the entire Hearts of Stone LP in order (is it really 30 years old this year?).
They had their loose "Juking around", the covers and the classics...surprises and showstoppers. The set list is usually just a rough guide.
They took us through a funky cover of "Lean on Me"... another perfect 9/11 song "It's Been a Long Time"...a fiery "Working Too Hard"...an impromptu "Take the A Train" and an uplifting finale of "Havin' a Party."
It all just worked.
I don't think it's possible for the Jukes to do a bad show. I've never seen one. And I'm always loving life a little more when I head out the door.
That's the fun-loving spirit of the band & their music. That's what makes them the house band of the State of New Jersey....the reason they can keep on going strong (besides having to pay the rent) and the reason I keep on showing up.
Go have some fun. Go see the Jukes. You'll feel better...even if you don't take advantage of the nice Goldstar price.

I have never been disappointed at a Southside Johnny show. It is just aWritten on Mar 09 2009
little better when you don't pay full price. I went to the Sunday, March 8th
show, was totally satisfied, then, when they came back for an encore, Little Steven was with them, they did 4 more songs, it was great. Southside also called Dennis (did not catch last name) up on stage, and introduced him as the man who taught him harmonica, and let him wail for a few songs, all in all, a great show.

More Information About Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes in Concert
Description

In the spring of 1975, Southside formed the Asbury Jukes with old friend Miami Steve Van Zandt (Little Steven), who later Joined Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. The late-seventies saw the Jukes grow in stature from a highly competent R&B-styled bar band into a competitive horn-driven mainstream rock band with a series of original albums to their credit. For the uninitiated, a live Jukes gig can be an exhilarating, inspiring experience. They're the real thing: human, fallible, mean, moody and magnificent, capable on a good night of blowing the roof off.
