One of Latin America's signature dance styles gets examined from an unexpected angle in the vibrant, colorful documentary Tango Negro: The African Roots of Tango. Many South American nations, including Argentina and Uruguay, have a history of slavery and tango's roots are heavily intertwined with the culture and thrillingly percussive music of those slaves who were brought over from central Africa. Part concert film, part historical account, Tango Negro is a stirring tribute to the early, uncelebrated creators of one of the world's most beloved dance forms and is loaded with beautiful scenery, music and informative interviews with tango experts and fans. Seattle-based jazz musicians Chuck Deardorf and Dave Peterson, along with their fellow group members, come to Symphony Space for a one-night only performance. All About Jazz describes the group as “an updated brand of West Coast cool, by way of the Northwest.” Alternately reflective and fiery, the Deardorf/Peterson Group swings a late-night set, which will include a performance of “That’s the Deal,” the new theme song for Selected Shorts, Symphony Space’s literary series.
