Set against the vibrant, manic backdrop of Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, Black Orpheus is a tragic love story retelling the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. Winner of the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, this beautifully photographed movie, with a lively soundtrack that includes the work of Antonio Carlos Jobim, helped popularize bossa nova music in the United States. This tale of star-crossed lovers plays at Symphony Space as part of its Classics in HD screening series. Learn More
Seattle-based jazz musicians Chuck Deardorf and Dave Peterson, along with their fellow group members, come to Symphony Space for a one-night only performance. All About Jazz describes the group as “an updated brand of West Coast cool, by way of the Northwest.” Alternately reflective and fiery, the Deardorf/Peterson Group swings a late-night set, which will include a performance of “That’s the Deal,” the new theme song for Selected Shorts, Symphony Space’s literary series.
