This was a great evening, marred only by a sound problem. Because of a bad microphone or sound imbalance, it was very hard to understand the words when Ms. Lemper was singing. But, what a singer! And, what a terrific orchestra! Hopefully, they'll have the sound fixed in time for the next performance.

Excellent show, especially the first act, Kurt Weill's early work. Stunning venue, totally loved it. Ute Lemper rocks!

What an unusual treatment of classics! The arrangements were great, musicians virtuoso, and Uta Lemper is a great actress in addition to a great singer.
JALC orchestra did overpower Uta Lemper, so she became one of the (wonderful!) musical instruments. Again, it worked.

I whole-heartly agree. I was a little disappointed. The vocalist sound/acoustics system wasn't good as intended. The overall performance was okay yet interesting.

Description

As a young composer of contemporary classical and theater music in 1920s Berlin, Kurt Weill dreamed of working with the great American jazz musicians. In the 110 years since his birth, Weill's beautiful melodies and jazzy harmonies have been played by everyone from Louis Armstrong ("Mack the Knife") to Gil Evans ("My Ship”). The incomparable vocalist (and Weill interpreter) Ute Lemper, along with Warren Wolf on vibes, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will show how Weill's songs belong to the jazz world as much as to Broadway, film, and the concert hall.

German singer Ute Lemper has been a major film, theater, recording, and performing artist in Europe since she exploded on the scene in 1983 as the star of the German production of Cats. A prolific entertainer, Lemper has recorded more than 30 albums, garnering her first hit with the 1987 debut Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill. While the singer has explored the treasure trove of pop German anthems that Weill wrote long before any thoughts of Broadway brought the composer to America, Lemper has also explored the musical artistry of arguably the biggest star Germany has ever produced.
