Tony-winner Donna Murphy ( Passion, The King and I) stars in this heartfelt and humorous new musical, with book and lyrics by Iris Rainer Dart, author of Beaches, and a score by Mike Stoller (Smokey Joe's Café) and Artie Butler. The story takes place both in 1930s Poland, where Raisel (Murphy) makes Yiddish musical-comedies, and New York in the 1970s, where she comes into conflict with her daughter over passing traditions on to her 10-year-old granddaughter.

We're rooting hard for "The People in the Picture" to make it because of the subject matter, the wonderful work of the old-timers in the supporting cast, Nicole Parker, and, of course, the wondrous Donna Murphy. And we did see the third preview, so we know it must be in transition, but the first act, as they say, needs work. It might be an issue of just tackling too many issues, but there was a marked unevenness in the early going. Part of it might involve integrating Parker and her gorgeous voice into the rest of the play. It felt that things just stopped a couple of times so we could hear her sing -- sort of the Broadway equivalent of forming a seven-letter word in your Scrabble tile-holder with no place on the board to place it. A last observation. Rachel Resheff tries hard, maybe a little too hard, but seems over her head, while Andie Mechanic, in a smaller but perhaps meatier role, just shines. Good luck to one and all.

This is a wonderful play! A must see in NYC. The theater is old and beautiful. We had seats 3 rows from the stage. The singers were great and the story unforgettable. Don't miss it!

Description

Two time Tony® Award-winner Donna Murphy (Passion, The King and I) stars in The People in the Picture, directed by Leonard Foglia. This new Broadway musical features book & lyrics by the author of the international best seller Beaches, Iris Rainer Dart, and a glorious score by Mike Stoller (Smokey Joe's Café) and Artie Butler (“Here's to Life”).

Once the darling of the Yiddish Theatre in pre-war Poland, now a grandmother in New York City, Bubbie (Murphy) has had quite a life. But what will it all mean if she can't pass on her stories to the next generation? Though her granddaughter is enchanted by her tales, her daughter Red will do anything to keep from looking back. A fiercely funny and deeply moving new musical that spans three generations, The People in the Picture celebrates the importance of learning from our past, and the power of laughter.
