I loved the community theater and the vibe that filled the place. It was very entertaining, funny and a great pick-me-up! The actors were amazing, very talented singers and great performers. My fave was the scared crow, he was hilarious!

I took my 11 year old to see this performance, and we both enjoyed it tremendously. Although I must say, it did have an African American flavor, it was entertaining and hilarious, yet it kept the main points of the original version. A great performance for children of any age. I would recommend it to everyone. Keep up the good work!

This was an amazing performance, and we got 3rd row center seats! People with young children should be aware the of the flying monkey scene. The kids in the first row were very scared, but the adults LOVED IT.

This was a wonderful & high spirited rendition of the Wiz!! The cast was superb on stage and got the audience involved as well. The theater is quite cozy so the cast danced and sang in the aisles as well as on stage. After the event was over the cast posed for photos and signed autographs as we exited the theater. I highly recommend this event for all ages!

Ahhh, what a refreshing experience to see such talent in a Harlem theater. The show was incredibly and the cozy atmosphere invited the audience into the production and had us laughing from start to finish. I would HIGHLY recommend this to other members.

We enjoyed it sooo much! I went with my 9 year old and he told me it touched him and that he was inspired by it. It was definitely a must see at a reasonable price. I always enjoy the shows at this theatre. The main actress sings like Stephanie Mills. I was very satisfied!

The play was excellent. Although, there was no dog playing Toto, the actors did a such a great job, that he wasn't even missed. The theatre is very intimate and the actors made the audience feel like they were part of the show. The "Wiz" and the Scarecrow were my favorite characters. Dorothy was great too. Definitely fun for the whole family.

Let me start off by saying that the reason I wanted to see this production is because I did the show myself 30 years ago with a professional NY company. I really enjoyed the experience and wanted to see the show as an audience member. As this is the first and only production I have seen by the Harlem Repertory Theater, I have nothing else with which to compare it. But this production looked quite amateurish, in my opinion, which is not always a bad thing, necessarily. It was as good as any high school production with adequate performers, for the most part, but the whole thing seemed very low-budget, with the minimal sets and unimaginative, whatever-they-could-get-a-hold-of costumes. But the most annoying aspect was the sound. The sound system was horrendous! The principal players wore body mikes, but the sound speakers were placed only in the back of the theater, so if you were sitting anywhere but the very back of the house, you couldn't hear anything. And the place was not very large at all. Isn't it known that they need speakers in the front? And then the mikes were turned on only during the songs, because the spoken lines could hardly be heard without the proper amplication. I was sitting near the front myself, and the actors voices didn't carry even that far. The band was only three pieces, but they managed to drown out the singers at every turn. Michael J., in the role of The Wiz, was too much of a flaming queen to be taken seriously. I'm sure it was obvious to everyone. I am not a homophobe, mind you. I happen to be a gay man myself. But what I'm saying is, if he's going to go that route (I certainly have no problem with The Wiz being gay), then he should remain true to the character. His flirting with the women in the cast and coming on to them like a completely straight womanizer came off as ludicrous and unconvincing. I'm pretty sure that no one else in the audience believed him either. In summary, I did not enjoy this production at all, and I am the type of person who normally is quite easy to please. It was a painful experience. I didn't think that anything could be worse than the 1978 film version of "The Wiz" that starred Diana Ross, but this managed to top even that in its awfulness.

This was a wonderful, lively event for everyone. Most seniors who attended remember the previous plays and movies about "Dorothy." I remember my son as a munchkin in his school play. The cast was excellent and the experience will affect their future endeavors. Bravo!

Fantastic performance. We went with about 12 people. Ages 5 to 59, We celebrated my mothers 58th birthday. the cast was great and friendly. They took pictures with the kids. To make it even better we had dinner at Melbas which was amazing. Best thing was parking and yes we are planning on returning for another performance.

I enjoyed this great rendition of "The Wiz." Even though the show stole moments from this summer's revival of "The Wiz" starring Ashanti, this cast had a great energy and enthusiasm throughout the whole show. They were even interactive in bringing the kids onstage during one of the numbers.

I attended this event, on Thursday, September 3rd, at 12 noon. The audience was comprised of many children, and they sat mesmerized as the actors performed. The costumes were bright and creatively designed, the audio was absolutely flawless, the vocals excellent, and the overall production was contemporary without losing the timeless and positive message.I recommend that anyone who has not seen this production, run and get tickets.!!

I almost didn't get the chance to see the show since the parking was SO bad. We drove around for an hour before miraculously finding a spot (There aren't even parking garages so you really don't have a choice.). The show was really good, even with a baby, and the singing was amazing - very talented actors and actresses. I recommend if you go by public transportation.

I am a big fan of the Wiz and have seen the broadway production. So, in addition to wanting to support Harlem arts, I was anxious to see this version, performed mostly by students of City College. It was good...not great or excellent...good. If you go to this production expecting Diana and Micheal, don't go. But, if you want to see and hear local talent, then this show is good.

Dorothy, played by CCNY student/resident actor with the Harlem Repertory Theatre, has an amazing voice! I had chills listening to her sing! She is a perfect Dorothy;)

The Lion and the Wiz were played by an awesome actor by the name of Micheal J. He was amazing, hilarious, and talented! You hung on his every word. At one point Dorothy sang for the audience as The Wiz sat on his throne and even though she belted out "when I think of home, I think of a place", you couldn't keep your eyes off of him. He kept the audience engaged.

At the end of the performance the actors are outside of the theatre to greet you. This makes it a great performance for kids (there were many in the audience) because they get to shake hands with thier favorite characters.

This was a good show. I would recommend it if you are in the neighborhood and can get discount tickets. Thanks Goldstar!

My wife and I thought the production was great, especially for the price that we paid. We were looking for a donation box at the end of the show, but did not see one. We'll definitely try to catch productions by this group in the future.
We had a little bit of trouble locating the theater, it is not clear which building it is in when you are standing on the street. The building is at the SE corner of 135th st. and convent ave.

The music and acting were great. The production value was high. Only negative was it was hard to hear some of the dialogue and some of the lyrics.

All the seats are close to the stage and there are no obstructions.

I give it 4 stars as an Off-Bway nugget.

Took my sisters and we all enjoyed. At first it felt like I was at a high-school production, but after just letting go, relaxing and enjoying the efforts of the performers we laughed and had a truly good time. Very different rendition of the Wiz, indeed. I will encourage my friends to take their children. It is a nice family venue. Kudos to the young lady who played Dorothy. What a voice! The Good Witch of the ?North? too!

I thoroughly enjoyed this show. All the cast were really good, but the "Dorothy" character was exceptional. She not only could "blow", but her acting to me was truly A+. Considering the low budget they no doubt had to work with, this production was above and beyond expectation. I highly recommend seeing it. However, make sure you bring a sweater or jacket. Especially for the young ones. The air condition is kicking.

Great - I was not sure how it would play out because of the coziness of the theater - but let me just say they worked that space. I took my grandchildren from out of town, it was their first NY play - they LOVED it. The actors came out at the end and interacted with the crowd as they departed which was quite the experience for them. They both got to dance with the actors on stage and my youngest could not stop screaming that Dorothy touched her hand. I recommend this play to all - a great time and a fantastic experience.

we enjoyed it. Some of the actors are quite strong. Choreography uneven. Sound systems isn't great. But overall spirited and fun.

My girlfriend and I had a great time at this play. The theater is small and intimate and the actors were real close and interacting with the audience members. It was a nice little twist from the original Wiz and very entertaining. Nice event to take the ladies out on a date fellas...highly recommended.

The show was great, my favorite characters were Dorothy and the scarecrow. Lion was good, but an understudy was used midway through the show it was a woman who was much shorter than the man that started the show (announcement was made prior to start that this would occur). Tin man was an older gentleman who was a little slow moving and speaking. A more modern day version, she was trying to get home to Brooklyn. All in all I really enjoyed it. BTW...Ashanti is no competition for this Dorothy, she reminded me of a young Stephanie Mills. Take your whole family.

Bonus: free Parking at Aaron Davis Hall lot with security.

I recommend this show to everyone. There is not a bad seat in the house. The voices and energy of the cast were amazing. I was left wanting to see it again and I will. Parking was convenient. Getting into the venue and getting seated was easy too. There were also some in-expensive refreshments available during intermission.

myself and my Fiance had a wonderful time at the performance. One of the things we enjoyed most was the fact that the actors were very interactive. Being that we sat in the front row there were times we thought that the actors were going to step on our feet. LOL! We very much recommend this performance to all..... Very delightful.

I didn't expect much , but I got lots more than I expected. This performance was altitudes above your typical community theater. Along with my girl and her daughter of 15, we were all equally entertained for the duration of the play. we would recommend it to anyone with a pulse and an appreciation for talent.

The play was nothing like I expected. It was 10x better than I could have imagined. There was dancing which I did not expect. Actors interacted with audience at times.

It was a very nice production. The theater is small so every seat is great. I took the kids and they had a great time. I look forward to seeing other productions.

Even if one judged the production by the enthusiastic audience's reaction alone, it could be counted a hit. Staged in three-quarters, so that one feels a part of the wonderful action, the show is lively, full of visual flair and imaginative staging. There is something to commend about each of the many performers, kudos to the marvelous cast of extraordinarily talented actor/dancers and to the overall direction. No matter how many times you have heard or seen The Wizard of Oz, you will be happily, joyously surprised by what you see in this production. Don't miss it.
