Experience an amazing night of high-flying feats and stunning imagery from Cirque du Soleil. This magical romance, inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest, takes you to a mysterious island where goddesses walk the land and the rhythm of life is ruled by the cycles of the moon. The daughter of Queen Prospera is undergoing the rituals of her coming-of-age ceremony when a group of young men, caught up in a storm, become stranded on the island. Prospera's daughter falls in love with one of the brave sailors, but the two lovers must overcome many trials and setbacks before finding peace together. As the story unfolds, the dazzling arts of Cirque du Soleil illustrate the tale. The island world of Amaluna bursts to life with jugglers, aerial performers, dancers, unicyclists and much more. I'm a huge fan of playwright Adam Rapp. His plays in general, including this one, are not for everyone. When you enter the theater there is a sign warning about nudity and gunshots. And indeed there is a lot of full nudity, both female and male.
The play is very well-written, as all his work is. There's been a terrible war; men are being tortured - women being entered in a database. The action onstage focuses on a woman whose husband is missing - she is holed up trying to survive.
The acting is excellent and many of the themes are disturbing. It's a beautiful work about an ugly reality. Recommended for those who don't like things tied in neat packages - there's a lot of room for interpretation and debate.
