Members Who Went Said:Andy Farber's band was thoroughly enjoyable (great interpretation both of familiar jazz standards and pieces Andy has written and arranged) and Hilary Kole's vocal performance was fabulous. The Birdland experience is fun but the food, to me, was on the expensive side ($5 for a soda, $22 for ribs, for example). It was very tasty, though.
Yvette enjoying life! It was the ideal setting for a jazz club, dark, intimate and we got perfect seats. The martini's were delicious and worth every penny in my opinion. Andy Farber's band was excellent as was Hilary Kole. Most people were paying $20 a head at the club, so it felt great to pay that for two people thanks to Goldstar! Another lovely evening thru Goldstar! A must for anyone who loves jazz as well as anyone who wants to experience something different.
Anonymous Member We so enjoyed the talented Andy Farber and his band. The music choices were delightful and memorable. Birdland is such an intimate venue. This was our first time there and would not hesitate to return for dinner and the show. We found the menu varied enough to satisfy each of us. The prices were reasonable. Hilary Kole has a fabulous voice. We would love to buy her first album when it is released. The evening flew by. We wanted more! |

More Details About This Event: Award winning composer/arranger and saxophonist Andy Farber leads his 17-piece jazz orchestra through a program of original compositions and new arrangements of standards. Vocalist Hilary Kole is a star in the midst of a meteoric rise. The NY Observer calls her, "Hip and lovely...a musical marvel... sexy, charming and funny." While the NY Post raves, "Kole is drop dead gorgeous." And Time Out NY notes, "Kole has a sophisticated sex appeal...and presents her own distinctive style. She is the best at selling a song." About Birdland: It was Charlie Parker, familiarly known to his fans and fellow musicians as "Bird," who served as the inspiration for Birdland. Opened in 1949, the club became a locus for the hot jazz scene in New York druing the 30's and 40's. In addition to Parker, many other jazz greats graced the Birdland stage over the years: Count Basie and his smokin' big band made Birdland their New York headquarters, John Coltrane's classic Quartet regularly appeared at the club in the early 1960s, and Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bud Powell, Stan Getz, Lester Young, Erroll Garner, and many, many others played to sold-out audiences. Regulars to the nightly festivities included such household names as Gary Cooper, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Joe Louis, Marlene Dietrich, Ava Gardner, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Sugar Ray Robinson. Now, half a century later, the Birdland banner has been reborn in midtown. After a decade of neighborhood success on the Upper West Side, Birdland owner John Valenti decided to move the club back to Midtown after a decade of neighborhood success on the Upper West Side. The new Birdland offers top-flight jazz in a world class setting, good sight lines and acoustics, elbow room, and a menu ripe with award-winning Southern Cuisine. Since the reemergence of the club, midtown Manhattan has been treated to some of the best jazz on the planet, including memorable sets by such musicians as Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Roy Haynes, Lee Konitz, Tony Williams, Mark Murphy, Diana Krall, Michel Petrucciani, John Scofield, Kevin Mahogany, Dave Holland, and Tito Puente, as well as the big bands of Chico O'Farrill, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Maria Schneider. |
