From Anne Dorsen, co-creator of Broadway's Passing Strange, comes her latest work, Democracy in America. This show is an experiment in political performance: it is not art about politics or ideology but rather art that is made in a political way. A collage made from the jumble of ideas, opinions and attitudes floating in the American ether, Democracy in America is a continually shifting 4-dimensional billboard advertising the desires of the multitude.

I went a second time because I had a friend who really wanted to go. It had not improved since the preview. In fact it was more disconnected than before.

The cast was too disconnected from both the material and the audience. They blew several chances to draw us in.

Kind like watching a moving painting.

It could have been SO much more.

One of the cast members whispers FAR too loud to try to get someone to do something on stage and then nothing happens. He should have just addressed the audience and gotten a real volunteer.

Description

Using eBay, Craigslist, and a performance specific website all elements of the performance ARE UP FOR SALE. The creators will offer "for sale" space within the performance to both individuals and groups which can be used for any purpose the purchaser desires. This may include statements of the purchaser's opinions, jokes that tickle the purchaser's fancy, pre-existing texts of his or her choosing, or stories or anecdotes from the purchaser's life. In addition to the spoken material, the physical or non-verbal actions and all elements of the design will be available for sale. One might choose a particular image to be shown onstage, a costume for one of the performers, a sound cue to be played, or a gesture or sequence of movement. We will also offer product placement or other advertising opportunities to corporations, small businesses and groups

Democracy in America makes literal the so-called "market-place of ideas," in which those with means purchase access to the privately-owned technologies of opinion-making and information dissemination, and those without money are the passive receivers of views which supposedly represent them.
