I am an American of Hungarian (mixed) decent, and was expecting something Hungarian here. Accents? No. Hungarian spoken? In one scene for approx. ~11 seconds and by no one in the cast (it was a recording). Hungarian references? Uh, no...for Pete's sake, not one reference to palacsinta? Nothing? No sporadic Hungarian words? Really?Written on Oct 22 2009
The plot, acting, imagery, in general was good, storyline, good, but I was lured in to seeing this because of the Hungarian reference. It could have been a play from anywhere if they had changed the one Hungarian recording. :(
PS Thanks Goldstar for giving me the wrong address of the theater. Your print out said 20th, not 30th street, and I almost missed the show.

The writing of the play was very thought provoking...made me question some of the issues and details after the show was over - reviewing in my head the intensity that it was all portrayed with. Great acting. Great sets. Moved quickly. Very artistic. Just enough reference to the Hungarian locale to know time and place. Overall a special work, another special work written by Ashlin Halfnight - a writer to look out for.Written on Oct 23 2009

Description
A play by Ashlin Halfnight. Directed by Kristjan Thor.
A Hungarian lake. A divided family. An imperfect heaven.
Set in a tenuous afterlife, Balaton is a multi-generational drama that charts a fractured Hungarian family’s fight for unity and security in a world after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
Frightened and disoriented, Sabrina stumbles her way through a cold and indiscernible space, where time lurches forward, rushes back...and disarmingly stands still. In this liminal world, where memories replace and highlight reality, Sabrina and her divided Hungarian kin must confront the post-communist, Americanized world that has drastically altered their lives. Desperate for unity, the family struggles violently against the infiltration of fast food, designer clothing, infidelity, assimilation and uncompromising youth. And all the while, the stars shine above Balaton.
