Holy smokes, what a night. Comix offered up a deal, such a deal. OK, it wasn't that great of a deal in a strictly financial view, but that lemonade with gin in it is pretty good. Besides that, or those, I sat in a dark corner and watched as the almost totally competent emcee introduced the ghosts of comedies future and present, Master Brent Weinbach and the one and only Sir F. Murray Paul Tompkinsham.
I love Brent Weinbach. His material was more or less a complete assault on the audience's expectations of what constitutes jokes, an act, and a person. I'm thrilled that he's getting this exposure in New York. Maybe the Bachelorette party-offshoot table wasn't that into him (or was, in a kind of curious-about-trying-on-Buffalo-Bill's-skin-suit way) but I am sure at some point he will have his own army (uniforms are already half made). The combination of strong physicality and jokes that are pitched so high that you miss when you try to scratch your head filled the room with a heady hypno-vapor. All kinds of fun terror.
Paul F. Tompkins was in total command of the room and I think he healed a blind lady in the front row, honestly. His Overheard / Killroy chunk of jokes is getting tighter and funnier every time I hear it. It was my first time hearing the full version of his "NYC people in LA" bit.The man speaks truth—my brother moved from the NYC area to LA thirty years ago and he still does this stuff.
Overall, a masterful set. Paul's the only comic I know that can make you feel happy and ashamed simultaneously, especially if you really like pie. It's kind of magical for me to go to a venue like Comix, where I'd say it's 90% first-timers and the generally uninitiated and mostly undifferentiated masses, and watch these people find out that poo-poo & fart humor is only one of the many kinds of ha-ha acts. Even the kitchen staff was having a party, apparently, that's how exciting this all was.
