Description
Compagnie Maguy Marin, one of France’s most outstanding and radical choreographers, will return to The Joyce with a surprising work entitled Umwelt. This hour-long, hypnotizing piece is inspired by Samuel Beckett – so powerful it instigated reactionary riots when it first premiered in 2004 at The Tobbagan, outside of Lyon. The work features nine dancers rhythmically weaving on and off stage through mirrored slats, portraying basic human acts – biting an apple, washing a floor, kissing a lover. Through repetition and accumulation, this unflinching look at the meaninglessness of our existence displays how even the most significant actions, such as pointing a gun or rocking a baby, can become banalities. Umwelt literally means “world around” in German; by choosing this title and the notion it covers, Maguy Marin portrays a philosophical questioning on how the world resists change in this powerful work.
