If Billy the Kid, one of the most notorious and mythologized outlaws of our time, could talk from the grave, what would he say? Was this man who according to legend committed his first murder at 12 years old and went on to kill 21 men — one for each year of his short life — a vicious, ruthless and blood-thirsty sociopath? Or was he merely a resourceful survivor living in a lawless society where knowing how to use a gun was the difference between life and death?
SaBooge Theatre, creators of the award winning show Fathom (Ice Factory 05), return to New York City to present their work, Every Day Above Ground, a gothic western inspired by Booker Prize Winner Michael Ondaatje’s Collected Works of Billy the Kid, at Performance Space 122. With Every Day Above Ground, SaBooge uses their collective interest in history, storytelling and the macabre to explore this mystifying, fascinating and brutal character, William Bonney, otherwise know as Billy the Kid.
The Booker Prize, like the Pulitzer, is one of the world’s most prestigious literary awards. Ondaadje received the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1992 for The English Patient. Past winners include Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood and Ian McEwan.
Both Ondaatje and members of the SaBooge ensemble are based in Canada, and the collaboration between them began as a result of mutual appreciation for each other’s work. Inspired by Ondaatje’s shifts in narration and form (poetry, archival photographs and dime store novels), SaBooge marries rich visual storytelling with live music and innovative sound design to tell a startling, graphic and unsentimental tale by Billy himself and the people who knew him.
SaBooge shares the same impressive Ecole Lecoq lineage as New York favorites The Flying Machine, Pig Iron and Theatre de la Jeune Lune with their attention to physical inventiveness and found object set design.
Fresh from successful workshops in Montreal and Philadelphia, Every Day Above Ground dissects the complexities of Billy the Kid’s thoughts, motivations, personality and character to bring his inner world to life - after death.
Every Day Above Ground is directed by Adrienne Kapstein and written by Jodi Essery. Set/Lighting: Simon Harding; sound/composer: Jeff Lorenz; ensemble: Attila Clemann, Patrick Costello, Graham Cuthbertson, Kayla Fell, Trent Pardy, Magin Schantz, and Andrew Shaver.
