Description
February 15, 2012: Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and the Baroque
Unlike Michelangelo, Rubens admired the female nude and painted sensual voluptuous bodies with flowing, glowing colors. This dramatic, theatrical style correlated perfectly with the sentiments of the time. Both painter and diplomat, Rubens was knighted by Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England, and painted the life of Marie de' Medici, queen of France. Visit his palatial home, studio, and garden in Antwerp.
February 22, 2012: Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Impressionism
With a genuine love of nature, Monet sought to record the changing effects of natural light. He painted the same subject—subjects previously considered unworthy of an artist's attention—multiple times (Haystacks, Poplars, Rouen Cathedral), as he analyzed the effects of atmosphere, time of day, and weather conditions. Rather than recording every detail, he sought to convey an "impression" of a scene. Tour Monet's home in Giverny and wander through his lush gardens where he painted the Water Lilies.
February 29, 2012: Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) and the 20th Century
The American painter O'Keeffe is famous for her fantastic flowers, super-sized until almost abstract, filmy and diaphanous, sumptuous and sexually suggestive. She loved the American southwest and painted its vast landscape with splendid color harmonies. Although called "a loner," she had a productive relationship with the photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz. O'Keeffe's paintings, described as American Modernism, brought wide acclaim during a very long life.
