Unfortunately we did not have a good experience with our Harlem tour. Our guide was not prepared for the tour, could not answer any of our questions (we were advised to look things up online afterwards) and did not seem terribly interested in being there (he was often answering his phone during the tour and we would go through long spells of walking where nothing was said). He did mention that he was filling in for someone and did not know as much as the "regular guy", but the amount that he DID know was so limited that he really should not have been giving the tour at all!
We had heard that the Harlem walking tours were so rich in history so we were really looking forward to it. The architecture and buildings were wonderful to look at but, unfortunately, that was the best part.
We took a 15 minute "pit-stop" break at Starbucks because he felt we had been walking quite a lot (on a WALKING tour!) and then finished the tour at the end of that block because he was late for another tour and didn't feel the last location was really worth seeing. When the group said their goodbyes, he mentioned that tips were appreciated. We did not appreciate him asking for one and, frankly, were astonished that he thought he deserve one.
Again, we have heard great things about some Harlem walking tours. Unfortunately this was not one of them and we would not recommend this specific tour group.

Very knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic guide made the Harlem tour a good experience. We started at Alexander Hamilton's grange and walked down to Central Park, stopping to take in an exhibit at the Schonberg center and other sites.
