I have heard such raves over Ms. Monheit for the past few years I was really looking forward to seeing her. My husband and I both found her voice perfectly good (though a bit thin in the upper register) but, her incessant pouting, hair tossing, hair handling, holding her head between her hands (ostensibly during the dramatic parts of the song) were so affected and silly it was distracting. She needs a performance coach.
Especially as she is not 22 anymore.

I love Birdland. Easy to see even from the back row where Goldstar seats are.

It's the third time I've seen Jane Monheit and, although she has a beautiful and accomplished voice, in my opinion when performing live she has very little ability to connect with her audience. I keep going back in the hopes that experience will help but, so far, it hasn't. It's probably the last time I'll see her. The band was great as were the seats we had at Birdland.

The room is spacious and intimate at the same time. All good sight lines. Nice acoustics. Good food. One very long set played starting at 8:30. Nice selections both from new material and the standards.
Food is fairly priced. Drinks are good, when you order top brand you get it. My friend and I agreed that it was a wonderful evening.

She sings really well, has an outstanding voice and gave very good renditions, especially of Ivan Lins' "Acaso". She needs, however, a better stage presence, for she sometimes seemed lost on what to do with her hands and long hair. While appreciating the pianist's solos, she would turn her back, for long periods, to the bar side of the venue, which I feel not to be right (although I was sitting on the other side of the floor). The pianist and the bassist are great, but the drummer should improve on his act. Despite all those points, I recommend the show and will continue to buy Ms. Monheit's CDs and will attend her future live presentations.

More Details
Just 8 years ago, a 22-year-old Long Islander named Jane Monheit -- now renowned as one of the world's most beloved and accomplished song stylists of her generation-- signed her first recording contract and was immediately recognized as a star on the rise. Her 2000 debut album, Never Never Land, introduced the world to a stunning, raven-haired beauty whose crystalline voice and buttery phrasing, was (and remains) impossible to pigeonhole, simultaneously suggesting the smarts of a seasoned jazz artist and the cunning storytelling skills of the finest cabaret performers.
Since then, two of her recordings have received Grammy nominations, she has known the sweet satisfaction of chart-topping success (several of her discs have debuted at number one), done her festive duty with a stunning Christmas album (The Season), and found herself moving to Sony for her two most recent albums, 2004's Taking a Chance on Love and the subsequent yuletide disc. With Surrender -- her seventh album and her first for Concord -- she truly comes into her own, going beyond the "promising young vocalist" category to emerge at the top of her profession.
