International Women's Day is a global holiday celebrating the political, economic, social and cultural achievements of women around the world throughout history. 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of this holiday, which was started to honor the Suffragettes, who fought tirelessly to earn women the right to vote. In honor of this special day, International Concerts presents a performance of great singers of the Russian opera including Makvala Kasrashvili, Olga Savova, Oleg Kulko and more, including special guest Rene Pape.

Performers: 

MAKVALA KASRASHVILI, leading international Soprano of the Bolshoi Opera Theatre is brought back by popular demand. She holds the title of Artist Laureate of Russia and is Recipient of the country’s coveted Gold Medal, its highest award for artistic achievement. She has performed at every major opera house in the world including Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, Munich State Opera, Vienna State Opera and La Scala.

OLGA SAVOVA, Mezzo-Soprano, People’s Artist of Russia, Grammy nominee for Semyon Kotko, has emerged as a leading star of the Mariinsky Theatre. She has toured with the Mariinsky Theatre to Covent Garden, La Scala, Baden-Baden, Korea, Japan and the Metropolitan Opera. Ms. Savova sang Brunhilde in the Mariinsky Theatre Ring Production in Japan, Belgium, England, Korea, Switzerland. On October 22, 2005, Ms. Savova sang Brunhilde opposite Placido Domingo (Siegmund) in a concert version of “Die Walküre” at Teatr Wielki Warsaw, Poland. She performs this season in the Metropolitan Opera Production of Boris Gudonov.

OLEG KULKO, Tenor, roles at the Bolshoi Theatre include King Charles VII in The Maid of Orleans, Lykov in the Tsar’s Bride, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Lensky in Eugene Onegin. He has appeared at opera houses worldwide. His performances for the Metropolitan Opera include Cavaradossi for Met in the Parks, The Prince in Dvorak’s Rusalka and Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana. He is with the Metropolitan Opera during the current season.

ANNA AGLATOVA, Soprano, Bolshoi Theatre, is recipient of the “Bella voce” International Competition, Sergei Leiferkus Grant from the Vladimir Spivakov Foundation and prize winner of the “Neuen Stimmen” International Competition. In 2005, she made her Bolshoi Theatre debut as Nannetta (“Falstaff”) and has since performed principal roles at the Bolshoi and international theatres, including Violetta (La Traviata), Pamina (“Die Zauberflote”), Susanna (“Le nozze di Figaro”) and Liu (“Turandot”).

ELCHIN AZIZOV, Baritone, joined the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow in 2008, where he has given vivid performances as Escamillo in Carmen, Eugene Onegin, Ibn-Hakia in Iolanta, Tomsky in The Queen of Spades, Leandro in Love for three Oranges and Griaznoy in The Tsars Bride. In addition to his Russian repertoire, he has performed in opera houses and concerts halls in Paris, Vienna, Washington, Milano and Salzburg such roles as Amonastro in Aida and Doctor Falke in Der Fledermaus.

VALERY GERASIMOV, Accompanist, has been a leader of the opera division of The Bolshoi Theatre of Russia since 1992. His awards include The International Competition of Pianists in Vibo Valentia, Chopin International Competition of Pianists; Pechkovskii Vocal Intl. Competition, Rimskii-Korsakov Competition, and Elena Obratzova’s Comptetition. Mr. Gerasimov concertizes internationally as soloist, and as accompanist to world-famous singers.

Special Guest Artist:
RENE PAPE, Bass, is a singer with immense vitality, revered by critics and audiences alike. The New York Times said, “the German bass René Pape is one of the most compelling artists to have emerged internationally...” while Opera News has written, “René Pape thrills his audiences with charisma, intelligence, and a one-in-a-million voice: the luxurious timbre of Pape’s supple, expressive bass is unmistakable...” He appears in the title role of Boris Godunov in a new production at the Metropolitan Opera. The Financial Times described Pape as the “consummate Boris...” His 2009 sold-out Carnegie Hall solo concert received ecstatic reviews. He received the “Artist of the Year” Award from the German Critics Association for his recording, “Gods, Demons & Kings,” which also received the coveted Echo Award. He was honored by the Metropolitan Opera Guild this past October. Mr Pape appears through the courtesy of the Metropolitan Opera.
