Referred to as "the most cunning talk show around" by Entertainment Weekly, Late Night with Conan O'Brien began its 14th season on August 29, 2006. In addition to dominating the ratings in its time period, every aspect of Late Night has been praised by the media, from Conan himself ("modest, wry, self-effacing, and demonstrably the most intelligent of the late-night comics," said The Washington Post) to the show's comedy ("original and often breathtakingly silly," according to the New York Daily News) to The Max Weinberg 7 ("the best band in late-night TV," said The Washington Post).

In 2006, Late Night was honored with five Emmy nominations (a personal best for the show), including nominations for Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Series (for the 4th straight year) and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music, or Comedy Series (for the 10th straight year). 2006 also saw Conan and the Late Night writing staff win a Writers Guild Award for Best Writing for a Comedy/Variety Series, their sixth Writers Guild Award overall (including consecutive wins in 2002 and 2003).
