One of the foremost ballerinas in the world today, former Bolshoi dancer and current artistic director of the National Ballet Ensemble of Georgia, Nina Ananiashvili brings her impeccable technique and expressive style to Avery Fisher Hall for a special performance choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky. She will perform a program of three ballets with the State Ballet of Georgia and live musical accompaniment. Charms of Mannerism presents pairs, trios and quartets of dancers that play with traditional ballet conventions. Dreams of Japan brings elements of Japanese traditional dance into a classical ballet piece resulting in a dreamlike vision inspired by Kabuki theater. Finally, Bizet Variations is a pas de six based on the "Chromatic Variations" piano piece by Georges Bizet.

Outstanding performance!!! Totally and utterly enjoyed even though the house made an error with the tickets and gave out the same seat twice. It all worked out in any event. Thank you.

Description

Nina Ananiashvili took her first steps in ballet art as an ice skater. At the age of ten, she was taken to the Vakhtang Chabukiani Choreographic School in Tbilisi, after which she attended the Moscow Choreographic School under the tutorship of Natalia Zolotova, a well-known ballet teacher.

Ananiashvili was a soloist at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre from 1981 and a Prima Ballerina from 1985 to 2004.

On the Bolshoi stage, under the guidance of the legendary dancer, Raisa Struchkova, she prepared and performed leading parts for the Swan Lake,  The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Romeo and Juliet (Leonid Lavrovsky’s edition), Raymonda, Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Nutcracker, La Bayadere, The Golden Age, La Sylphide, Chopeniana, The Little Prince and others.

Nina Ananiashvili is the only ballerina who was awarded with four most prestigious ballet prizes:

- Gold Prize of the 20th International Contest in Varna (Bulgaria) in 1980 (young class)
- Grand Prix at the Moscow 4th International Contest in 1981 (young class)
- Gold Prize at the Moscow 5th International Contest in 1985 (senior class)
- Grand Prix at the U.S. Jackson 3rdInternational Contest in 1986 (senior class)

Nina began performing on the most prestigious stages around the world in 1988. She was the first ballerina from the former Soviet Union to have been invited by the New York City Ballet, a theatre associated with the name of the legendary George Balanchine, performing leading parts in Raymonda variations, Symphony in C and Apollo. She also performed with the Royal English Ballet and the Royal Danish ballet. From 1993 to 2009, Nina was a Prima Ballerina at the American Ballet Theatre. She is a frequent guest to theatres in Sweden, Norway, Portugal, Finland, Germany, Monte Carlo, Birmingham, Boston, Tokyo, etc.

Nina Ananiashvili is the first ballerina to have been awarded the Russian national prize Triumph for the achievements in the field of art.

In 2002, she was awarded the most prestigious annual U.S. dance award by the Dance Magazine.

Since 2004, Nina has become Artistic Director of the Ballet Company of the Tbilisi Z. Paliashvili Opera and Ballet State Theatre. Thirty seven ballets have been staged by the Company during the last six theatrical seasons. These include new editions of classical works as well as ballets by Balanchine, Ashton, Bournonville and Kylián. Modern choreographers like Alexei Ratmansky, Yuri Possokhov, Trey McIntyre, Stanton Welch have permanent cooperation with the Company that has had successful ballet tours in the U.S. (2007, 2008 and 2010), Japan, and the Edinburgh International Festival, an appearance marked by a Herald Angels award. In line with the artistic directorship of the Company, Nina Ananiashvili continues her active performing career.

In 2007, Nina Ananiashvili was selected as the United Nations National Goodwill Ambassador for achieving Millennium Development goals in Georgia.

In 2011, she was awarded the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity by the President of the Italian Republic.
