Rent, set in the East Village, returns to its New York roots where it had a groundbreaking 12-year Broadway run. Jonathan Larson's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical uses dance, pop, rock 'n' roll, R&B and salsa to tell an emotional tale about a community of young New York artists who celebrate life while struggling to make it in the city. Based on Puccini's La Boheme, the characters in Rent deal with the classic themes of love and loss while facing modern problems like homelessness and the AIDS epidemic. The timeless story comes to vivid life through the modern rock score, including such favorites as "La Vie Boheme," "What You Own," and "Seasons of Love."

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark: Sly Satire Skewers Hollywood Racism

Full Price:
$43.00 - $55.00
Our Price:
$21.50 - $27.50

Set in Hollywood over a 70-year period, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's pseudo-biographical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark follows the life of a headstrong African-American actress who begins a career in the 1930s, at a time when her only shot at success lay in stealing small scenes in big Hollywood blockbusters. Seventy years later, film buffs reflect on the life and legacy of the controversial star, whose eventual fame and fortune came at the price of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes. Nottage artfully blends comedy and social commentary for a thoroughly entertaining yet thought-provoking picture of the cultural climate that shaped Vera Stark. Clever and illuminating, this show draws on screwball films of the 1930s and uses today's fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend, and reflect on who she might have been if she'd lived in a different time. Production was good. Had a couple understudies for our Sunday matinee but they weren't bad, just left us wondering how much better the main performers would have been. Story is getting very dated... hard to see HIV/AIDS as a short-term death sentence given the advances that have been made in the 15 or so years since the play was written.

Hi
I have been a huge fan of "Rent" since it's beginnings. I absolutely loved the off-broadway show that I was blessed to be able to see at a discount thanks to Goldstar. I hope to see it again.
