Two completely unrehearsed guest performers--different every night--follow instructions from a recorded voice, with a divider between them. They can't see each other; the audience sees both sides, and their differences. Twisted and mischievous, Performance Space 122's Doublethink, created by Rotozaza, is an epic story-experiment about freedom, the farce of self-knowledge and the times we prefer being told what to do.

Quotes & Highlights

  • "Five stars! A fascinating exercise in psychological puppetry...a supurb deconstruction of notions of relationship...a triumph of technological and conceptual prowess, in the guise of bare-bones avant-gardism." --Irish Times

Description

Since 1998, Rotozaza has produced an innovative, humorous and risk-taking theatre. Recently, this has involved selected performers, different every night and often non-professional, who simply agree to follow instructions, live and unrehearsed – a practice which has produced links with artists and venues all over the world. Via strategies such as this, the work carefully confuses reality and fiction, celebrating theatre by identifying 'what can only be done live'. Rotozaza's work is production-light, inexpensive to travel and can often be performed in the language of the host country.
