For some reason stand-up comedy, an art form that encourages self-deprecation, finger pointing, and loathing, fit like a glove for Joe DeRosa. Growing up in a miserable, one-horse town in Pennsylvania, Joe needed an outlet; a way to express his true pessimistic sincerity to the world. After attempting to use music as his mouth piece, playing for over five years with various bands and ensembles, he put down his saxophone, guitar, and drums and picked up a microphone at a local watering hole. Though his first set was a bomb, Joe realized that being utterly alone on stage was where he felt most embraced. He started hitting the Wednesday night open mic at the Laff House in Philadelphia and within a year, he was a regular there and at all the major clubs in the surrounding area.
It wasn't long before the jump to New York City became inevitable. Joe quickly began working regularly at New York venues such as Caroline's, Stand-up New York, the Laugh Factory, and Gotham Comedy Club, as well as the top clubs throughout the country. The big apple also brought new, interesting opportunities, including television, to the table. Since his arrival he has appeared on "Last Call with Carson Daly," and performed on Comedy Central's "Premium Blend," the "Insomniac Tour with Dave Attell," and on the "New Faces" showcase at the Montreal Comedy Festival.
Acting has also become a facet of Joe's career. He shot the film Hysterical with director Bradley Kaye, in which he played the lead character Miles. Joe also landed the principle role as "TV Head" in an add campaign for Sports Net New York. In addition, he's combined theatrics and a return to his musical roots with his rap group DEEP, a sexually explicit satire of hip-hoppers such as the 2 Live Crew and N.W.A. DEEP's album "The Game Plan" was released spring 2006.
But despite the success in other areas, Joe DeRosa's first love will always be stand-up. The simplicity and honesty of the art form is what really fuels his fire. So come on out to a show. Wherever you see him you'll be entertained by his ornery rants on subjects such as dating, religion, and pop culture.
