I would have given it a higher rating except for the fact that my seats were on the left side of the house. He NEVER faced the left, occasionally faced center and continually faced the right. We were looking at his profile the entire night. Very disappointing. I would have thought that anyone on stage would give equal attention to the whole house. It was alot of money to see sa profile for 2 hours. If I knew how to contact him I would send him a letter stating THAT HE SHOULD PAY MORE ATTENTION TO HOW HE STANDS.Written on Aug 28 2008

Goldstar tickets were priced well and easy to obtain at the box office. However, The Boston Pops at Radio City is not ideal. First, the sound was totally canned, that is, microphones amplified and homogenized the orchestral sounds, and it was like a monaural CD. There was no printed program, and I didn't mind the conductor announcing various selections, but I missed not knowing the arrangers, and the opening selection was never identified (variations on Bernstein's "Wonderful Town" or was it "On The Town", both or neither, and arranged by whom? It was awful).Written on Aug 23 2008
Brian Stokes Mitchell, as always, delivered, but his set with just piano was so innappropriate for this setting, and indicated that there was less than total thought given to this evening....just plug in his cabaret act to fill it up.
I realize this is a "pops" concert, more suited to an outdoor summer setting, but ending with "New York, New York" indoors, with the conductor urging the audience to sing along, was ludricous, and should never be attempted unless lyrics are provided in a projection over the orchestra. And "Stars and Stripes Forever" is a tradition, I know, but somehow seemed hollow and out of place indoors in August. Save it for National Holidays, please.
Finally, why was there so little use of Radio City's incredible stagecraft? Lousy lighting (the conductor was totally in shadow for the first two selections!) and a black backdrop made "The Showplace of the Nation" seem like a presentation at a high school gymnasium. And why not have a little fun and give us a regular Radio City thrill using the stage elevators? It was a missed opportunity, and if the problem was money then take a little less profit. The place was sold out, and I'm sure you all raked in plenty. I've now been there and seen it, I will not return for another Boston Pops gig at Radio City.
