New World Stages - Stage 5 (New York, NY)
Four formerly imprisoned New Yorkers with a total of 70 years in prison relate their journeys of crime, privation and redemption in this dramatic story of change and hope. The Castle is both the name of this drama and the name of the Fortune Society residence facility in New York City where each of these performers found sanctuary upon their release from prison.

The Castle was really moving...gut-wrenching at times.
Thank God we had front row seats, lots of leg room.
Overall very good! A must see!

Inspirational reading, especially since the characters were real people, and I referred my godson in Indianapolis to a way to get ideas for a career.

I had a seat in the middle of the front row. I had to bend my head back to see the faces of the performers. It made me really uncomfortable to be so close especially with such intimate stories being told. As well - the seats were very old and there was very little space; we were practically ontop of each other as audience members.
The stories were very interesting and moving. However if I had paid any more than I had paid (the discount price) I would have felt I paid too much. Though I appreciate that the performers were telling their actual stories - the fact that none of them had much experience on stage often came across as stiff line readings, which additionally made me self-conscious about the performances.

This was such a moving dialouge. I loved the fact that is was real persons not actors (portraying something they may not really know about).
The Castle is a "drama verite" in which four former offenders with a total of more than 70 years in New York State prisons recount their stories of privation, crime, imprisonment and redemption. While about prisons and former prisoners, the show is not grim at all, but rather wonderfully human and inspirational. The Castle is both the name of this drama and the name of the Fortune Society residence facility at Riverside Drive and 140th Street where each of these performers found sanctuary upon their release from prison.
At every performance, the show has garnered an immediate standing ovation and a lively "talk back" with the performers after the show.
Conceived and directed by David Rothenberg.
Written in collaboration with Vilma Ortiz Donovan, Kenneth Harrigan, Angel Ramos and Casimiro Torres.
The Fortune Academy is The Fortune Society's nationally recognized residence in Harlem for homeless individuals with criminal records. Since opening its doors in April 2002, the Academy has been heralded as an exemplar in its field by community leaders and government officials alike.
