Loosely based on the premise of what might have happened to Henry James' famous character Isabel Archer from 1881's The Portrait of a Lady had she traveled east instead of west, this new musical traces just such a journey by a character of the same name. With words and music by Eric Schorr (Frog Kiss, The Doctor's Wife), Tokio Confidential finds Civil War widow Isabel Archer traveling to exotic 19th-century Japan. There, she becomes captivated by the forbidden art of tattooing, falls for a master artist, gets inked herself -- and unwittingly puts her life in danger. Johanna McKeon directs the show, which owes a debt to the Japanese noh tradition and features choreography by Tricia Brouk.

TOKIO CONFINDENTIAL was a classy show, the music very beautiful, perfectly orchestrated, and lyrics that were much better than many recent Broadway musicals. Compared to PACIFIC OVERTURES (the comparison was made by one of the critics), the characters had more heart, much more for the audience to buy into and hang in for; the book was well crafted, with no lapses. The show had/has great integrity and the performers, who gave their best, were exceptionally skillful, talented, and right.

The plot was compelling and full of mystery. I loved that it required me to think about what was going on and what dangers were present because I was able to form my own theories, making the ending even more interesting to see unfold. The vocal talent in this musical is phenomenal, but only a few songs stood out to me; most of the songs did not do the performers justice. However, this was the only qualm I had. Being a person who is interested in all types of art-forms in different cultures, this musical was perfect for my tastes.
