In addition to being a superb conductor, Alan Gilbert is an educator. This concert presented some rarely heard works that some might feel are a tad inaccessible. By offering them in the best performance imaginable, as Maestro Gilbert and the NY Phil and friends did on Tuesday night, he educated us as well as edifying and entertaining us.

This was a truly memorable concert of music that is rarely heard. The orchestra, augmented by many guests, especially in the percussion section, played difficult music with exceeding clarity. The new music director, Alan Gilbert, conducted with accuracy and panache. At the end, the audience appropriately stood in admiration.
