Repertory East Playhouse presents Christopher Sergel's stage adaptation of Harper Lee's classic 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Depression-era lawyer Atticus Finch struggles against racial prejudice in the rural South as he tries to exonerate a black man falsely accused of rape. Much of the story derives from the perspective of Finch's children, Jem and Scout, who witness the moral and societal issues that plague their town. This timeless tale of the innocence of childhood and the shock of growing up provides a poignant look at justice and the human spirit, as told through the eyes of a young girl learning the mysteries and realities of adulthood. To Kill a Mockingbird remains a stirring portrayal of both racial and family relations of its time that continues to resonate today. Learn More

Written on Aug 06 2008i caught this play on closing night. it was a slow but steady build to the second scene. it was brilliant! the acting was amazing and it was a standing ovation from me. everyone gave their all and we got it. great theatre and i look forward to more plays from this venue. it was my first time there.
Written on Aug 04 2008The actors were wonderful. However, it just isn't our type of story. I wouldn't recommend it to people I know. We were very impressed with the intense dialogue and how much of it was delivered with great angst. I don't think that is what we were supposed to come away with. We didn't hate it, we just barely liked it--a little.
Written on Jul 28 2008This was a very intense play. Unimaginable amount of dialoge that had to be memorized by the actors. They did a fine job with the material. Though it was supposed to be happening in LA it has a more New York vibe about it. At least one of the actors has a strong New York accent--not sure if it was his own or was part of the direction. I enjoy live theater and am appreciative that my city has a theatre group who put out provocative and entertaining works.
Written on Jul 21 2008First rate performances for this rising professional venue. Very comfortable theatre. Edgy play very well done. All of the actors combine to create this world of strange obsessions, desires, and manipulations. Rabe's work is a study in misogyny and men who use relationships with women and each other only for the benefit of themselves with disastrous results. Mikee Schwinn and Mike Owston stand out as user and usee in a symbiotic relationship that baffles understanding. All of the performances are strong and the women who suffer most are excellent in weathing this malestrom of contempt with incredible performances.
The show is Downtown Newhall in Santa Clarita in an area attempting revitalization. Restaurants are few but there's a nice Mexican restaurant next door to the theatre. Parking is available at the Metrolink station behind the theatre.
More Information About Hurlyburly
Description

HurlyBurly is a riveting dark comedy which chronicles the non-events in the lives of a group of fast talking, narcissistic, L.A. based professionals, nose deep in the decadent, perverted, cocaine laden culture that is Hollywood. We follow the characters, who can't seem to slow down long enough to breathe, let alone make sense of their lives, as they pursue their sex crazed, dope ridden vision of the American Dream.

The Off-Broadway production, directed by Mike Nichols and starring William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, Judith Ivey, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel and Jerry Stiller, received high praise.
