In driving out to Newhall, I was not expecting to see as gritty and tough a version of this play as it turned out to be. The cast was dead on with their interpretations, and even through the most wild and pedantic Bogosian dialogue they kept it totally believable. The relationships were solid, and embodied the years of growing up together in a small town filled with angst, boredom and depression. The direction was raw, with just the right amount of theatricality, which the excellent sound, light and scenic design enhanced.

Great small show that keeps you thinking about your life!
If you're in the area, RUN to see this WONDERFUL SHOW!!!

Great play, great acting!
The Repertory East Playhouse will continue the highly anticipated “81 Series” with the critically acclaimed drama subUrbia, by Eric Bogosian.
“The 81 Series, or our ‘studio series’, features limited engagement performances of more academic, provocative pieces of theatre by well known and respected playwrights throughout the theatre world. Most of the themes explored in The 81 Series deal with pertinent social ideals and values of American society.” explains REP Artistic Director Ovington Michael Owston.
"We gotta get out of this place" is more than just a refrain from an old Animals song, it's been the theme of small-town drama for well over a century. In subUrbia, Bogosian takes an anti-utopian look into the lives of seven youths who meet at the parking lot of a Pakistani owned convenience store as they waste away what are supposed to be “the best years of their lives”.
“subUrbia hits very close to home,” explains Producer, Mikee Schwinn, “right in our backyards there’s a subculture of people in their early 20’s who want to move beyond their limitations, but they lack the means to follow our culture’s established step-by-step approach: high school-college-career-family –so they’re viewed as losers. Everyone can’t grow up to be rockers and movie stars, so what do you do then? In most cases, you end up like the characters in subUrbia”.
